Character's Personality: Shinji is a very quiet and nervous individual with next to no self-esteem. He hates himself and believes that he has no reason to live. He has intense abandonment issues due to his relationship with his father and avoids social contact whenever possible, believing that in the end people will only hurt and betray him.

For a short period, Shinji finally manages to come out of his shell, forming bonds with those he works with at NERV, and even making friends at school. However, his new found confidence is extremely short-lived, and due to a series of traumatic events ends up more broken than before.


Character's Background: Shinji was born a year after the Second Impact, a catastrophic event which destroyed over half the world’s population. His Mother and Father were both leading scientists at GEHIRN, at organisation dedicated to defeating the Angels. It also aimed to achieve the Human Instrumentality Project which would artificially force the evolution of humans and merge their individual minds into one entity, thus becoming closer to God; though only a select few individuals know about this secondary agenda. A terrible accident occurs when Shinji is three years old resulting in the apparent death of Shinji’s Mother which he witnesses when she willingly becomes a test subject. With his Mother dead, his Father, Gendo, effectively abandons him, sending him off to live with one of his teachers. It is because of his abandonment at such a young age that Shinji grows up with so many psychological problems, believing that if his own Father left him, then why should anyone else care about him?

When Shinji is fourteen years old he is called out of the blue by his father to return to Tokyo-3. It turns out that Gendo, is now head of NERV, GEHIRN’s predecessor, and requires his son to pilot the ‘Evangelion’ a giant humanoid robot. Although reluctant at first, Shinji forces himself and becomes the recognised pilot of ‘EVA-Unit 1’, one of three Evangelion Units used to battle against the ‘Angels’, strange creatures of varying forms that for some unknown reason seem to be attacking Earth - specifically Tokyo-3.

Shinji comes to live with Misato Katsuragi, NERV’s Operations Director who then becomes his official guardian. He forms a strange connection with his fellow pilot, Rei Ayanami, who to him and the rest of the world is a complete enigma. Initially jealous of Rei due to her relationship with his Father, Shinji soon finds himself seeking the mysterious girl’s company. A short period later, a third pilot comes to join them in their fight against the Angel’s, Asuka Langley Sohryu who is the complete opposite in personality to Shinji. Asuka ends up living with him and Misato.

Despite fighting the Angels, Shinji becomes more confident and happy, and it is only after a series of events were he witnesses one by one, the emotional destruction of those he came to depend on, does he withdraw, becoming worst than before. With no one left to care, a mysterious boy called Kaworu Nagisa appears before him. He reaches out to Shinji, even going as far as telling him that he loves him, something which Shinji has never been told before. With everyone else having abandoned him, Shinji comes to rely completely on Kaworu, someone so different and kind. However, this friendship is short lived as it is quickly revealed that Kaworu is actually one of the ‘Angel’s’. Feeling utterly betrayed, Shinji is ordered to go after him in his EVA. Yet, after reaching his destination, Kaworu changes his mind, asking Shinji to kill him, explaining that only one life form (humanity or the Angels) can live, and that he believes that human’s are not the existence that should die. After a long scene of what is intended to be severe emotional conflict for Shinji, he kills Kaworu which proves to be the final straw for Shinji’s sanity.
